 Charges involving theft, fraud, and property offences can cover a wide range of situations. They may involve shoplifting, taking something without permission, using someone else’s property with their initial approval but failing to return it (theft by conversion). Allegations of deception, false statements, or financial dishonesty may or may not accompany the act of taking. 

These cases are often more complicated than they first appear. What looks simple on the surface may actually turn on intent, mistaken identity, ownership issues (“color of right”), consent, accounting records. Perhaps the RCMP and the Crown are missing part of the story.

 The consequences depend on the allegation and the value involved, but they can include a criminal record, fines, probation, restitution, and jail in cases of thefts from employers or very high dollar value thefts. Fraud and theft-related offences can also affect your employment (especially if your job requires you to handle money or property);  your personal reputation; and your future travel. 

Yukon-wide, and especially the communities, this reputational impact can be just as damaging as the legal penalty. Being branded a “thief” can be a damaging experience. 

 Police often investigate these files through witness statements, surveillance footage, receipts, bank records, emails, text messages, or inventory and transaction reports. In fraud cases, investigators may also look at financial documents, online activity, or patterns of conduct over time.

Allegations of financial crimes often rely on a “paper trail”, which means the evidence can look strong even when the facts are disputed. That is why it matters to look closely at what was actually said, done, authorized, or misunderstood.
